The Starting School Group?

“What exactly is this?” I hear you ask.

The Starting School Facebook Group is a private and free treasure trove of resources created over the last year 3 years. It contains exciting writing lessons I’ve led with my daughter, Rosa-Mae, to help motivate little writers and guide you on how to support at home. There are informative, easy to find Q and A sessions on reading and writing and this helpful resource also features interviews with expert guests on a range of parenting topics.

The content has been guided by parents, carers and educators when they have joined the group so be sure to complete the membership questions, to help me, help you when you join. Watch this video introduction.

Created during lockdown, this was my small way of trying to offer help during this challenging time.

Edith (aged 2) had only just settled into her fabulous nursery, after struggling to transition for some time. Then the pandemic hit.

Despite my many years as a specialist early years teacher, I must admit, I was concerned about how she would transition into the new aged 3-4 room.

“If I had these concerns, perhaps other families with nursery or reception-aged children might too.”

These concerns led to the creation of the ‘Starting School Group’.

Following lockdown, the group was created to support families with the September transition. However, it’s content and membership continue to grow. It is now a community of over 1,400 positive, respectful families and educators, sharing parenting and learning support.  I continue to create content in response to the membership questions when families join.

When you join, I recommend that you use the search bar at the top of the group to receive guidance and inspiration with topics. These include ways to nurture confidence, support phonics, name writing, mark-making, maths, fun activities to keep children busy and entertained, guidance on how to help summer-born children and advice from expert guests on topics such as behaviour, toileting, sleep, fussy eating (and so much more!)
