Private Virtual Schools Page
Hello,
My name is Nicola, and I specialise in supporting social care teams, foster and kinship families with children’s learning. I understand the challenges that Virtual Schools and the families of children looked-after face, when striving to help them reach their potential.
Whilst some families and carers may have had negative school experiences, others may have found raising and educating their own children easy, and be surprised when the same approaches don’t work when supporting the children in their care. And, of course, the latest ‘school methods’ are end of year expectations have changed so much.
There will be some families who prefer the simplicity of an activity card. Others will find an ‘in person’ online tutorial more motivating and engaging and learn best that way . Packaging learning in a portable, ‘gift like’ activity tin is certainly appealing to young learners.
I offer a range of resources and services to help meet those different needs: bite-sized video tutorials, convenient online workshops, dinky activity tins, a ‘Learn to Write’ pack and ‘Learning Letters’. I also offer bespoke products and services on request. Whichever product or service you choose, I can promise that ‘fun’ will be at the heart of all my resources to help build positive relationships, ensure progress and to build a positive attitude towards learning.
My carefully designed, playful resources help educators, kinship and foster carers and social care teams to build connection and offer appropriate challenge – key to boosting motivation, self-esteem, confidence and enjoyment. Virtual Schools tell me that they also help strengthen their engagement with families and carers.
Over the last three years, I have also provided support inside a private ‘Starting School’ resource group for those caring for children aged 2-6. This includes free activity ideas, videos and live Q & A sessions with myself and other experts on a variety of popular learning and parenting topics. There are now 1,400 members. Please get in touch if you would like to share the free link with your families or on your website.
What next?
You may wish to scroll down for an overview of the products and services and to visit the ‘shop‘ section of the website for further details. I then recommend a Teams meeting to discuss how I can help and to answer any questions you may have. We can discuss bespoke requests for family & carer workshops and activity tins too.
Teams meetings can be scheduled on Mondays 11-2.30 and Wednesdays 9.30-2.30 but I will do my best to fit in with your busy schedule. Please email me to arrange a time that suits you and your early years/primary team:

Current partnership work with Virtual Schools
The workshops, tutorials and resources have been purchased for foster families, carers, social care teams and schools. They are often used to supplement foster carer training events.
The online workshops prove popular because busy families can join these videos live, have their questions answered, or watch these later at their convenience. And the activity tins and ‘Learn to Write’ packs present as ‘fun gifts’ (with plenty of stealthy learning opportunities built in) rather than ‘homework’. The discretely colour coded cards inside the activity tins help make make it easier for families and carers to engage children in learning activities by offering appropriate challenge.
At the request of virtual schools, I am currently creating a speech and language activity tin and preparing an online ‘pre-writing into writing’ workshop to support children aged 3-6. Please get in touch if you are interested in pre-ordering these resources.
Let’s make learning easier, active and more fun!
Tutorial Packages
1.After purchasing the ‘Times Table Tutorials‘ for ages 5-8, a simple link is provided for you to share with unlimited users. Access is provided for one year.
2.Membership to the ‘Writing Tutorials‘ for ages 3-7 offers lifetime access. This is a private Facebook group.
3.The ‘Learn to Write‘ resource pack comes supplied with novel resources and step-by-step video tutorials on how to use each one.
Family & Carer Workshops
Convenient online workshops are available. These are private YouTube video links.
Families and carers can pause, repeat and take notes when watching these videos from the comfort of their home.
A discounted, bulk package for all 6 workshops is available for 1 year.
Learning Letters
These are emails containing video links, activity card ideas and new top tips for homework and learning.
Subscribing to these ‘Learning Letters’ will help families and carers remember how to best store and use the resources to their full potential and make learning easier, active and more fun.
A member of your admin team can subscribe to these emails and forward these on to families.
Please get in touch if you would like to purchase a package of fortnightly emails.
Bespoke Zoom or Team Sessions
Online family/carer workshops are available on a range of topics.
For example, a reading training session to support children to meet the end of year reading expectations.
A pre-writing skills session to support children aged 2-6 secure fine, gross motor skills and pre-writing shapes.
And a session to support children aged 5-9, with times table games and homework in preparation for the Year 4 National Times Table Check would be useful.
Bespoke Tins
There are already 8 activity tins in the range.
Bespoke activity tins are available, on request, to help offer an alternative to the traditional methods of sitting at the table with paper and pen.
For example:
- Speech and Language
- Spelling
- Times Tables
- Preparing for starting school
It is possible to include QR coded video tutorials inside these tins too.
Testimonials
Petrina Charnley-MonkCLA Achievement Teacher, Westmorland and Furness
We distributed the Dinky Dice Games to nearly 60 schools and they have been really well received. We had lots of positive feedback from teachers on the positive engagement with pupils.
Annette TurnerHead, Southend Virtual School
Nicola supplied us with a range of activity tins and a family/carer workshop video for our Foster Family training event in September. We packaged these in gift bags for families to take home to help make learning fun. Sharing products at these events has strengthened our engagement with families. The feedback has been that these resources are appealing for children as they are packaged as gifts and games (unlike typical homework). Families like that the activity tins are portable and offer an alternative to sitting at the table to learn. We look forward to offering the additional activity tins and the times table tutorials as a sweetener for our forthcoming coffee morning with foster families this December. And we hope that by sharing the link to the Starting School group we can continue to build further engagement with families and carers.

Joseph Askew - Achievement Teacher for children with a social worker, Cumberland Virtual School
Nicola from Happy Home Learning has supported the work of Cumbria and Cumberland Virtual School for several years now, creating and supplying Dinky Dice resources to Cumbrian Schools in 2021, supporting our drive to improve early numeracy outcomes. Recently, Nicola has partnered with my work within Cumberland Virtual School, developing and facilitating the ‘Social Workers as Reading Champions’ project for Children with a Social Worker. Nicola has trained, equipped and supported social workers to take an active role in reading with children during their statutory visits. She provides drop-in feedback and on-going sessions for social workers. Working alongside the virtual school she is supporting the pathway to a future where most CP/CIN visits use reading as a powerful social work tool and promoting the confidence in and love of reading. Social Workers in the pilot have access to Reading Refreshers, Tricky Word and Dinky Dice tins. Nicola’s resources, skills and experience are invaluable to Virtual Schools seeking to promote the education of children in practical and meaningful ways in school and at home. Virtual Schools across England would benefit from knowledge of the resources and support Happy Home Learning can offer.
Sam Wilson - Headteacher, Brighton and Hove Virtual School
Nicola from Happy Home Learning presented her fantastic learning resources at our Fostering Conference earlier this year. It is clear to see Nicola’s passion and creativity is infused in every aspect of her work, and this came across naturally as she reminded carers that play is at the heart of learning, especially for younger children.
Mia, Foster Carer
The sessions were really helpful. They were arranged on a day and a time which was most convenient for me - when my 3 children were in school. It was useful to meet someone with the knowledge to pass on, someone with the ideas who is easy to speak to and wouldn't judge me. I found it helpful meeting 1-1 with Nicola because what works for one child won't necessarily work for another child - every child is different. We foster 3 children and used to get lots of feedback when my eldest was in reception but I have no idea what is expected in year 1. I hadn't realised they were learning to count in 2s 5s and 10s and now have some simple, fun games to play to practise chanting these and games to support number bonds that we can all play together as my year 1 boy has been finding this hard. It will be useful to have games that don't always use a screen as a lot of the year 1 maths homework is on a screen. Nicola has written up notes from our sessions and emailed these to me to helpfully refer back to. She asked me if I would find it more useful to have these printed and sent through the post. I much prefer receiving information on paper so she's going to send me the summary notes with the activity tins and tutorials instead.
